The decisions and reasons for decision of the Supreme Court of Canada fall within the scope of the Reproduction of Federal Law Order, P.C. 1996-1995, December 19, 1996, 51/97-5. These documents may be reproduced, in whole or in part and by any means, without further permission from the Supreme Court of Canada.

The captioned headnotes, lists of cases, statutes and regulations judicially considered, and lists of authors and publications cited, other editorial features of the reasons for decision, and the Bulletins and News Releases do not fall within the scope of the Reproduction of Federal Law Order. They may be reproduced, in whole or in part and by any means, without charge or further permission from the Supreme Court of Canada for personal use and other uses permitted under the Copyright Act, RSC 1985, c C-42, as amended from time to time, provided that the user:

·         exercises due diligence in ensuring the accuracy of the materials reproduced;

·         identifies the Supreme Court of Canada as the source; and

·        does not present the reproduced materials as an official version, nor as having been made in affiliation with or with the endorsement of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Please note that the English and French electronic versions of the HTML, Word and PDF copies of the decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada have been prepared for ease of reference only.

The official versions of decisions and reasons for decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada are published in the Supreme Court Reports (S.C.R.). An electronic version can be found in the “Resources” section. PDF copies of all volumes from 2013 onwards have been and continue to be released simultaneously with the print version of the S.C.R.  Digitized copies of all volumes going back to 1877 are also available. Counsel may cite either the print or the PDF version of the S.C.R. in documents filed with the Supreme Court of Canada, and both versions should be cited in the same way.

For all purposes of interpreting and applying the law, users should consult the S.C.R. Unreported judgments are decisions which have been released, but not yet published in the S.C.R., they may be revised. Once a decision is published in the S.C.R., the PDF copies of each English and French versions are replaced with a PDF copy of the side-by-side bilingual decision as published in the S.C.R.
