OTTAWA, August 12, 2015 – The Chief Justice of Canada, The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., announced today the appointment of Mr. Gib van Ert, counsel with Hunter Litigation Chambers, to the position of Executive Legal Officer of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. van Ert will join the Chambers of the Chief Justice on August 24, 2015, for a two-year term. The Chief Justice said: "Mr. van Ert brings to the position a broad range of experience and talents as legal counsel and as a distinguished scholar, which will serve the Court well in the coming years".
Mr. Owen M. Rees, who has been Executive Legal Officer since August 2012, will be returning to private law practice at the conclusion of a three-year term on September 30, 2015. Chief Justice McLachlin stated "Mr. Rees has provided invaluable assistance and advice during his tenure at the Court, for which I am very grateful".
The Executive Legal Officer acts as principal advisor to the Chief Justice, assisting her with the administration of the Court, the Canadian Judicial Council and the National Judicial Institute. He is responsible for media relations at the Court.

OTTAWA, le 12 août 2015 – La Juge en chef du Canada, la très honorable Beverley McLachlin, c.p., a annoncé aujourd’hui la nomination de Me Gib van Ert, un avocat du cabinet Hunter Litigation Chambers, au poste d’adjoint exécutif juridique de la Cour suprême du Canada.
Me van Ert se joindra au cabinet de la Juge en chef le 24 août 2015 pour un mandat de deux ans. La Juge en chef a dit : « Me van Ert entre en fonction nanti, en tant qu’avocat et juriste émérite, d’une expérience et de talents très diversifiés dont la Cour bénéficiera durant les années qui viennent ».
Le 30 septembre 2015, au terme d’un mandat de trois ans, Me Owen Rees, l’adjoint exécutif juridique de la Cour depuis le mois d’août 2012, retournera exercer le droit en pratique privée. La juge en chef McLachlin a déclaré ce qui suit : « Me Rees nous a prodigué une aide et des conseils inestimables durant son mandat à la Cour, et je lui en suis très reconnaissante ».
L’adjoint exécutif juridique est le principal conseiller de la Juge en chef et l’assiste en ce qui concerne l’administration de la Cour, le Conseil canadien de la magistrature et l’Institut national de la magistrature. Il est également responsable, à la Cour, des relations avec les médias.
