Ottawa, March 7, 2002 –
The Supreme Court of Canada announced today the appointment of Professor Daniel Jutras, of the Faculty of Law, McGill University, to the position of Executive Legal Officer.
Mr. James O’Reilly, who has been Executive Legal Officer since 1997, will be leaving on June 30, 2002 to pursue other legal interests. Chief Justice McLachlin stated “Both former Chief Justice Lamer and I have had the benefits of Mr. O’Reilly’s valuable assistance and advice for a number of years, for which we are very grateful”.
Professor Jutras, a former law clerk at the Court, is currently Director of the Institute of Comparative Law at McGill, and will assume the position on August 1, 2002, for a 2-year term. The Chief Justice said: “Professor Jutras brings to the position considerable experience and talents, which will no doubt serve the Court well in the coming years”.
The Executive Legal Officer acts as principal advisor to the Chief Justice and is responsible for media relations at the Supreme Court of Canada.

La Cour suprême du Canada a annoncé aujourd’hui la nomination du professeur Daniel Jutras, de la faculté de droit, Université McGill, au poste d’adjoint exécutif juridique.
Monsieur James O’Reilly, qui occupe le poste d’adjoint exécutif juridique depuis 1997, quittera la Cour le 30 juin 2002 pour poursuivre sa carrière dans un autre domaine juridique. La juge en chef McLachlin a déclaré : « L’ancien juge en chef Lamer et moi-même tenons à exprimer notre vive gratitude à Monsieur O’Reilly pour l’aide et les conseils précieux qu’il nous a donnés toutes ces années. »
Le professeur Jutras, ancien auxiliaire juridique à la Cour, occupe actuellement le poste de directeur de l’Institut de droit comparé à McGill. Il entrera en fonction le 1er août 2002, pour un mandat de deux ans. La Juge en chef a déclaré : « Le professeur Jutras apportera au poste sa vaste expérience et ses immenses talents, qui seront, sans aucun doute, très utiles à la Cour dans les prochaines années. »
L’adjoint exécutif juridique agit à titre de conseiller principal du Juge en chef et est chargé des relations avec les médias à la Cour suprême du Canada.
