Ottawa – August 30, 2004 — Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin greeted with great satisfaction today Prime Minister Paul Martin’s announcement of two new appointments to the Supreme Court of Canada.
“Madam Justice Abella and Madam Justice Charron are judges of the highest ability and integrity”, said Chief Justice McLachlin. “Each brings to the Supreme Court a vast experience on the Bench and a profound commitment to the rule of law. I am certain that the contribution of these two distinguished jurists to the work of this Court will be a source of pride for all Canadians”.
Justice Abella and Charron will be sworn in as new judges during a public and official ceremony which will be held in the Courtroom of the Supreme Court of Canada at a date to be determined, prior to the commencement of the Fall session.

Ottawa, le 30 août 2004 — La juge en chef Beverley McLachlin a accueilli avec grande satisfaction aujourd’hui la nomination de deux nouveaux juges à la Cour suprême du Canada par le Premier ministre Paul Martin.
La juge en chef McLachlin a déclaré : “La juge Abella et la juge Charron ont toutes deux fait preuve de la plus haute compétence et d’une intégrité irréprochable. Chacune apporte à la Cour suprême une vaste expérience de la magistrature, et un engagement profond à l’égard de la primauté du droit. Je suis convaincue que la contribution de ces deux juristes distinguées aux travaux de la Cour sera une source de fierté pour tous les Canadiens et Canadiennes.”
Les juges Abella et Charron seront assermentées au cours d’une cérémonie officielle qui aura lieu dans la salle d’audience de la Cour suprême du Canada, avant le début de la session d’automne de la Cour, à une date qui reste à déterminer.
