OTTAWA, February 20, 2004 - The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, today congratulated Justice Louise Arbour on her nomination by Secretary General Kofi Annan as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Justice Arbour announced that once the nomination is confirmed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, she will retire from the Supreme Court of Canada, effective in late June 2004, to take up the United Nations post in Geneva. Although the Chief Justice regretted the loss of such a valuable member of the Supreme Court of Canada, she recognized the great importance of the position Justice Arbour has accepted. The Chief Justice stated, “Canadians should be proud of Justice Arbour’s appointment as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Since her appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada, Justice Arbour has made a significant contribution to our jurisprudence and the administration of justice in Canada. It is always sad to see the departure of a valued colleague and friend. Nevertheless, I am comforted by the knowledge that Justice Arbour will bring her extraordinary skills and expertise to the important task of the promotion of human rights and justice for all members of the human family. My colleagues and I wish her all the best in this essential and difficult endeavour.” For her part, Justice Arbour stated that she was greatly honoured by this nomination, and by the confidence that Secretary General Kofi Annan has placed in her. “The High Commissioner for Human Rights plays a key role on the world scene”, said Justice Arbour, “and I will devote all of my energies to this extraordinary challenge when I leave the Supreme Court of Canada in June. It is with sadness that I will abandon the great privilege of being a member of such a remarkable Court, and I thank Chief Justice McLachlin and my colleagues at the Supreme Court of Canada for their unfailing support.”

OTTAWA, le 20 février 2004 - La très honorable Beverley McLachlin, Juge en chef du Canada, a félicité aujourd’hui Madame la juge Louise Arbour à la suite de sa nomination par le Secrétaire Général Kofi Annan au poste de Haut Commissaire aux droits de l’homme des Nations Unies. La juge Arbour a déclaré qu’une fois sa nomination confirmée par l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies, elle annoncera sa retraite de la Cour Suprême du Canada, prenant effet à la fin juin 2004, pour entrer en fonction au siège du Haut Commissariat à Genève. Quoique la juge en chef regrette le départ d’un précieux membre de la Cour suprême du Canada, elle reconnaît la grande importance du poste accepté par la juge Arbour. La juge en chef a déclaré : « Les Canadiens et Canadiennes peuvent être fiers de la nomination de la juge Arbour à titre de Haut Commissaire aux droits de l’homme des Nations Unies. Depuis sa nomination à la Cour suprême du Canada, la juge Arbour a apporté une contribution importante à notre jurisprudence ainsi qu’à l’administration de la justice au Canada. On est toujours triste lorsqu’on assiste au départ d’une collègue et amie estimée. Néanmoins, je suis réconfortée par la certitude que son expertise et son talent exceptionnels seront mis au service de la grande famille humaine. Mes collègues et moi lui offrons nos meilleurs voeux dans l’accomplissement de cette tâche difficile mais essentielle. » Pour sa part, la juge Arbour a indiqué qu’elle était très honorée par cette nomination, et par la confiance que le Secrétaire général Kofi Annan lui manifestait par cette nomination. « Le Haut Commissaire aux droits de l’homme joue un rôle clé sur la scène internationale, et je consacrerai toutes mes énergies à ce défi extraordinaire après mon départ de la Cour suprême du Canada au mois de juin. C’est avec regret que j’abandonnerai l’insigne privilège de siéger au sein d’une Cour aussi remarquable, et je remercie la Juge en chef McLachlin et mes collègues de la Cour suprême du Canada pour leur soutien indéfectible.»
