OTTAWA, August 3, 2005 - The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, announced today that Justice John Major has written to the Minister of Justice, Irwin Cotler, to advise that he will retire at the end of the year, effective December 25, 2005. “Justice Major has made a very great contribution to this Court and the country. He is a wonderful colleague and friend who will be missed”, said the Chief Justice.
Justice Major stated that he will leave with enormous respect for the integrity of the Court and its role under the Constitution of Canada. Justice Major, who will turn 75 on February 20, 2006, was sworn in on November 13, 1992. The mandatory age of retirement for Supreme Court of Canada justices is 75 years of age.

OTTAWA, le 3 août 2005 - La très honorable Beverley McLachlin, Juge en chef du Canada, a annoncé aujourd’hui que M. le juge Major a écrit au Ministre de la Justice, Irwin Cotler, pour l’aviser qu’il prenait sa retraite à la fin de l’année, en date du 25 décembre 2005. « M. le juge Major a grandement contribué au travail de la Cour et à son pays. C’est un collègue et un ami exceptionnel qui va nous manquer », a déclaré la Juge en chef.
M. le juge Major a déclaré qu’il partira avec un énorme respect pour l’intégrité de la Cour et de son rôle en vertu de la Constitution du Canada. M. le juge Major, qui aura 75 ans le 20 février 2006, avait prêté serment le 13 novembre 1992. L’âge obligatoire de la retraite pour les juges de la Cour suprême est 75 ans.
